One of the mysteries, but not really a mystery, of the music industry is that you need to invest a lot of money to make money. Airtime on radio stations and high ranking spots on streaming programs are usually paid for. This means that for most of history, working with radio stations has been incredibly difficult for indie artists because their music didn’t get played just because it was good, they had to pay for airtime.

During a 2004 investigation, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer did a lot to get rid of the pay-to-play practice on radio stations, but it didn’t solve the problem. The findings also had no effect on Spotify and Apple’s playlist curators. This makes it extremely difficult for indie artists to distribute their music.

Major record labels offer musicians a lot if they think you’re worthy of a contract. Then the band doesn’t have to worry about funding airtime, producing and distributing albums, or whether they’ll make a profit because they’ve signed a deal that actually makes them money. Major record labels open doors that most indie artists simply can’t break through on their own.

So, in many cases, singing with a major record label is a financial decision for a band. Many simply cannot continue without the support of a well-known company. Others do it as an artistic choice to help spread their music to a wider audience that they may not have been able to reach before. Either way, signing with a major label or subsidiary is the fastest way to grow in the music industry.

It is extremely difficult to find artists who are completely free from the influence of the big three, as they have a hand in many areas and almost everywhere in the world.

Not so long ago the term “indie” began to be actively used. The meaning of this word, in general, is not new. It is just that until recently it was not known to the majority of the population of our country.

Maybe someone still does not know what indie is and what it is eaten with? It’s simple, the term “indie” is associated with the word independent . Independent film, literature, music – all of this can be called with one word – indie. This is a whole system with its own musical groups, press, with its own small labels.

Indie combines a number of musical styles (indie-rock, post-rock, goth-rock, dark folk, emo, experimental electronics, industrial, alternative hip-hop, etc.). There is an indie answer to almost every mainstream trend. Proponents of this trend preach creative freedom, independence from producers and major labels. For them the material side is not important, their idea can be roughly expressed as “art for art’s sake”.

It all sounds very, very appealing, but in my opinion, somewhat utopian. You can’t go very far on sheer enthusiasm. And the musicians themselves, probably, understand it well, because their albums are published and sold. Such bands as Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie and many others, having signed contracts with famous labels, instantly gained tremendous popularity. And consequently, the concept of “indie” gradually turned into a kind of brand, which is now also making money.

As long as the creativity of a particular group attracts little attention to itself, it is quite easy for it to maintain its independence. Play in your garage, create at your own pleasure and do not report to anyone. But in our country, too, the independent music movement has confidently reached the masses.

As the popularity of the band grows, the number of offers from big corporations and famous labels increases, and the music transforms from independent to market music. All this does not mean the degeneration of indie culture, though. Just the original meaning is lost, the borders between indie and the mainstream are erased, in contrast to which, in fact, indie was created. If we talk about creativity, it often does not suffer from the fact that it gets recognition from the public, even on the contrary. The main task of the musicians is to keep their ideals, their philosophy. For us, ordinary listeners, it only remains to enjoy their musical creations.

The origins of indie culture
In the broadest sense, indie is any independent music of various genres, including indie rock, indie pop, indie electronica, indie folk, and independent music labels.

Indie rock, which emerged in the 1980s, was a genre of alternative rock music that existed on the underground scene. During this period, the concept of indie rock was used as a synonym for alternative rock music in terms of content, but it allowed distinguishing musicians by geographical criteria: it was assumed that in the first case we are talking about performers from the UK, in the second – from the USA. However, in the 1990s, when American pop-punk and grunge musicians, as well as English Brit-pop musicians, became incredibly popular and entered the mainstream, the concept of indie rock began to denote representatives of the underground alternative rock music scene. In the 2000s, the development of the music industry and Internet technologies led to the fact that indie rock became a commercially successful trend, so the meaning of the term was rethought again.

Indie rock as a musical genre implies freedom for various creative experiments with emotional background, sound, and lyrical component, carried out in accordance with the vision of the performer, not the mass audience.

Today, indie rock includes many genres and performers associated with alternative culture and having some relation to rock. In addition to rock itself, indie music genres include indie pop, noise pop, dream pop, Brit pop, etc. All these styles are united by the fact that they were formed on the basis of indie rock.

As a rule, indie rock is soft and melodic music with a slight retro touch, without aggressive sound and sound effects such as distortion.
